Philippines Considers Buying a Small Russian Submarine by 2027 - Defense Undersecretary

The Philippines is considering buying a small Russian submarine for the third stage of the modernization program of the country's armed force, from 2022 to 2027, Philippine Undersecretary of National Defense Cardozo M. Luna told Sputnik in an interview

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) The Philippines is considering buying a small Russian submarine for the third stage of the modernization program of the country's armed force, from 2022 to 2027, Philippine Undersecretary of National Defense Cardozo M. Luna told Sputnik in an interview.

The Philippine Armed Forces have been undergoing a modernization program since 2013. The program is split into several five-year stages, the so-called horizons.

"Maybe during our Third Horizon of our modernization we also plan to develop our submarine capability and Russia is also offering us a good equipment, the Russian submarine, which most of our neighbors are using.

Vietnam is using it, Malaysia is using it, Indonesia is using it, India is using it, everybody is using it. The electric powered submarine because it is kind of quiet. We are thinking of just the minimum size, not the large size," Luna said.

According to the undersecretary, this stage "will be from 2022 to 2027."
