TEHRAN (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th May, 2019) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif invited the Gulf countries to sign a nonaggression pact amid a tense situation in the region.
"Iran's proposal to sign a nonaggression pact with the countries of the region is on the table," Zarif said during a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamad Ali Alhakim in Baghdad, as quoted by the Telegram channel of the Iranian government.
Zarif added that Tehran wanted the best possible relations with the Gulf states and would welcome any proposals for dialogue on this issue to reduce tensions.
During a joint press conference with Alhakim after the talks, Zarif said that Iran was seeking to build balanced relations with all the countries of the Gulf.
"Tehran has a desire to build balanced relations with all the Gulf states," he said, as quoted by the INA news agency.
In turn, Alhakim stressed the need to continue the political dialogue in the region.
In the face of an alleged threat coming from Iran, the United States boosted its military presence in the Persian Gulf earlier in May, deploying a bomber task force and an aircraft carrier to the region.
