US Sees China As Critical To Climate Security - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 23rd September, 2021) The United States acknowledges China's critical role in maintaining climate security, but hopes Beijing will take additional steps on the issue of climate, a US State Department official told reporters.

"We do hope the PRC (People Republic of China) will do more, and we look forward to hear more about additional steps that they can take in this decisive decade," the official said during a telephonic press briefing on Wednesday. "The PRC is a critical player.

Washington welcomes the recent Beijing's decision to stop funding the building of coal-powered plants across the world, the official said.

The United States regularly raises the climate issue in talks with Chines authorities, including the recent conversation between presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jingping, the official added.

During his UN General Assembly address on Wednesday, Xi said China will not pursue new coal-fired power projects in developing countries around the world.
