US Report On Commerce In Space Focuses On Expanded Radio Spectrum - Commerce Department

An expanded radio frequency spectrum is needed to cope with an exploding demand for satellite services and promote commercial development of outer space, the US Department of Commerce said in a report on Tuesday
"In order for the United States to lead the world in a trillion-dollar space economy, spectrum policy must reflect the exploding demand in space and satellite services," Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a press release summarizing the report. "We must, in Federal and international proceedings, allocate and assign radio frequencies in a manner that recognizes both terrestrial and satellite operations as essential for innovation, competitiveness, and economic growth.
"
The report, named "Driving Space Commerce Through Effective Spectrum Policy," includes 13 recommendations related to radio frequency spectrum policies, the release said.
The report also includes US input at the International Telecommunication Union and other multilateral forums, the release added.
The Trump administration is proposing that private companies take over operations in low-Earth orbit, including operating the International Space Station (ISS) or a successor to the ISS, while the government concentrates on establishing a permanent lunar presence as a base to eventually send humans to Mars.
