Canada Worried About Detention of Ex-Diplomat in China Amid Huawei Case - Minister

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th December, 2018) Canada is alarmed by the recent detention of its former diplomat in China amid the row over the arrest of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of China's Huawei Technologies Meng Wanzhou, Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, media reported that former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig, who now serves as senior adviser to the International Crisis Group, had been detained in China.

"We're obviously worried about whenever a Canadian is put in a situation that puts them at some risk or jeopardy, where's there's no apparent or obvious cause or trigger for that .

.. What we know is that a Canadian is obviously in difficulty in China," Goodale said at a conference, as quoted by the CTV news broadcaster.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry earlier in the day slammed Ottawa for failing to promptly inform Beijing about the arrest of Meng. The CFO, who is a daughter of the company's founder Ren Zhenfei, was arrested in the Canadian city of Vancouver on December 1 on suspicion of failing to comply with the US sanctions against Iran.

Huawei has faced suspicions in the United States and several other countries that its equipment could be used by China for spying. The company has rejected the allegations.
