ASTANA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th March, 2019) Kazakhstan's lawmakers passed on Wednesday amendments to the country's constitution on renaming the capital to Nursultan after Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former head of state who resigned yesterday.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who has been sworn in as the interim president to fulfill presidential functions until the 2020 election, has said that the country should memorialize the name of its first head of state.

"The historic decision has been taken," Nurlan Nigmatulin, the speaker of the lower house, said after the voting.
