New Zealand's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Winston Peters, pledged on Friday that the suspected Christchurch shooter who killed 50 people at two mosques in the east of the country a week ago would be sentenced to life imprisonment
ANKARA (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd March, 2019) New Zealand's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Winston Peters, pledged on Friday that the suspected Christchurch shooter who killed 50 people at two mosques in the east of the country a week ago would be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The deputy prime minister gave a speech during an emergency session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, called by Ankara to address the rising violence and hatred toward Muslims.
"From here, this person will face the full force of the New Zealand law, he will spend the rest of his life in isolation in a New Zealand prison," Peters said.
The deadly shootings rocked the peaceful island nation on March 15. Police almost immediately detained a 28-year-old Australian national, who has been charged with murder and remanded into custody until April 5.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called the attacks a terrorist act and refused to ever mention the name of the suspected shooter so as not to give him the notoriety she accused him of seeking.
