No Evidence Of Foul Play In US Border Patrol Agent's Death: FBI

Washington, Feb 8 (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 08th Feb, 2018 ) :A border patrol agent whose mysterious death prompted President Donald Trump to renew his call for a wall along the US-Mexico border appears to have died as the result of an accident, according to an FBI probe.
An FBI investigation into the November 2017 death of agent Rogelio Martinez has not found any evidence of foul play. "To date none of the more than 650 interviews completed, locations searched, or evidence collected and analyzed have produced evidence that would support the existence of a scuffle, altercation, or attack," the FBI said in a statement on Wednesday.
Martinez, 36, and his partner were found badly injured in a culvert while on routine patrol near the town of Van Horn, Texas on November 19, 2017. Martinez died of head injuries and his partner was hospitalized.
The border patrol union claimed at the time that the pair had been the victims of an attack and Trump tweeted about the incident. "Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another badly hurt.
We will seek out and bring to justice those responsible. We will, and must, build the Wall!" Trump said. The FBI said the investigation "has not conclusively determined how Agent Martinez and his partner ended up at the bottom of the culvert.
" But it strongly suggested that the pair had met with an accident while conducting checks of culverts in the area.
The FBI said a Border Patrol dispatcher had spoken by telephone that night with Martinez' injured partner. "Although disoriented and unsure of his location, the second Border Patrol Agent advised that both he and Agent Martinez were hurt," the FBI said.
"The second Border Patrol Agent also made a statement to the effect of, 'We ran into a culvert,' 'I ran into a culvert,' or 'I think I ran into a culvert,'" the FBI said. "The dispatcher also wrote into a Border Patrol log, '(He) thinks they (both agents) ran into a culvert,'" the FBI added.
On Tuesday, Trump sought to use the death of an NFL player in a car crash to bolster his campaign to tighten border security. Guatemalan national Manuel Orrego-Zavala was allegedly drunk when his pickup truck killed Indianapolis Colts player Edwin Jackson and another man.
Orrego-Zavala was in the country illegally and had been deported twice previously, according to the US authorities. "So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed @Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson. This is just one of many such preventable tragedies. We must get the Dems to get tough on the Border, and with illegal immigration, FAST!" Trump tweeted.
