Investigators are seriously considering the possibility that the man who is suspected of opening fire in a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht had terrorist motives, based on the analysis of a note found in the car that the suspect may have used to flee from the crime scene, local media reported on Tuesday, citing the Public Prosecution Service
The Dutch police detained a 37-year-old suspect of Turkish origin soon after the shooting in Utrecht, located some 25 miles to the southeast of Amsterdam, on Monday. The man is believed to have left the crime scene in a Renault Clio, which was later located in one of the city streets with a note inside.
"Until now, we are looking seriously at a terrorist motive ... The note found in the getaway car and the nature of the facts would indicate this. Other motives have not been ruled out and these are being looked into," a statement by the prosecution was quoted as saying by the Dutch news portal.
According to the latest police data, the shooting claimed the lives of three people, with three others suffering serious injuries.
