People Around World Oppose Allowing More Immigrants To Their Countries - Poll

A large number of people around the world oppose allowing more immigrants to move to their country, a new poll by the Pew Research Center showed on Monday.
Across 27 countries surveyed, a median of 45 percent said that fewer or no immigrants should be allowed to move to their country, while 36 percent said they want about the same number of immigrants, the poll found.
Only 14 percent said their country should allow more immigrants, the data showed.
In Europe, majorities in Greece (82 percent), Hungary (72 percent), Italy (71 percent) and Germany (58 percent) voiced their opposition to more migration. Each of those countries has had to deal with a large increase in the number of asylum-seekers in recent years, the Pew Research Center noted.
Other countries with similar views include Israel (73 percent), Russia (67 percent), South Africa (65 percent) and Argentina (61 percent).
At the same time, a median of 64 percent said that out-migration, or people leaving their country for jobs in other countries, is a very or moderately big problem.
This largely negative view of migration comes as the number of international migrants reached a new height in 2017.
Worldwide, a record 258 million people lived outside of their country of birth in 2017, up from 153 million in 1990, the United Nations said in a recent report.
The 27 countries surveyed by the Pew Research Center for its poll have more than half of the world's international migrants, led by the United States with a 44.6 million immigrants in 2017.
The Center conducted the survey in the spring of 2018.
