WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st September, 2018) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview on Friday expressed hope that US President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un will meet for another summit on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
"I hope the two leaders [Trump and Kim] get together again to continue to make progress on this incredible important issue for the entire world," Pompeo told MSNBC.
Pompeo added that he is fully prepared to travel to Pyongyang again, but Trump will be the one to determine whether the next summit will take place.
The White House said earlier this month the United States has not ruled out organizing another summit with Kim, but the proposal is still in the works and no confirmation has so far been issued by the Trump administration.
Pompeo noted that important steps have already been made regarding North Korea, but much work remains to be done to reach denuclearization with verification.
Sanctions on North Korea are not going to be lifted until Pyongyang gives up its nuclear arms completely, Pompeo pointed out.
Pompeo also said that European countries support the sanctions as do Russia and China despite the fact that Moscow and Beijing have being caught violating the UN resolution on North Korea.
In June, Trump and Kim held a summit in Singapore during which the North Korean leader expressed his country's commitment to abandon its nuclear weapons program, while the United States pledged to provide security guarantees and freeze joint military exercises with South Korea.
