Pro-Belgrade Candidates Win Snap Mayoral Vote in Kosovo's North - Election Commission

Candidates from the pro-Belgrade Serb List national minority political party won snap mayoral elections in four northern municipalities of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo after resigning as mayors last fall in protest of Prishtina's decision to impose tariffs on goods from central Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo's Central Election Commission (CEC) announced

BELGRADE (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) Candidates from the pro-Belgrade Serb List national minority political party won snap mayoral elections in four northern municipalities of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo after resigning as mayors last fall in protest of Prishtina's decision to impose tariffs on goods from central Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo's Central Election Commission (CEC) announced.

Kosovo introduced in November 100 percent duties on goods coming from the two former Yugoslav republics. In response to the move, the head of four municipalities, where Serbs account for the majority of population, decided to step down.

"Zoran Todic of the Serb List has secured victory in Leposaviq with 96.

6 percent, Srdan Vulovic [won the mayoral election] in Zubin Potok with 94.5 percent, Vucina Jankovic [won] in Zvecan with 94.7 percent, chairman of the party Goran Rakic [secured victory] in North Mitrovica with 90.1 percent," the CEC announced early on Monday.

After Kosovo President Hashim Thaci set the date of the snap elections for May 19, the four resigned head of municipalities decided to run in the election so as to prevent Albanians from coming to power instead.

The turnout amounted to 42.42 percent, or almost 24,600 people. No serious incidents have been reported during the vote.
