SEOUL, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 10th Apr, 2018 ) :A new airport built in Saemangeum reclaimed area, will be able to handle 670,000 passengers annually by 2025, a government report showed Tuesday.
The government has recently conducted a review on the construction of an airport at Saemangeum, North Jeolla Province and found sizable demand for air travel, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement.
The ministry said the number of passengers on domestic and international routes at the new airport could reach 1.33 million in 2055. The airport is being pushed by local provincial authorities as a way to fuel the growth of the region, which is being developed into a new industrial region with sizeable farmland.
"The government is planning to conduct a feasibility study to see if an airport could be built and (if there is) general aviation demand," a ministry official said in the statement. Saemangeum was created by the building of a 33.9 kilometer long sea wall and is more than four times the size of Manhattan.
It is 270 kilometers south of Seoul, on the country's southwest coast and near the port city of Gunsan, which has a small airport.
