Russia Delivers 2 Tonnes of Aid to Adra Refugee Camp in Damascus - Reconciliation Center

DAMASCUS (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th November, 2018) The Russian Defense Ministry's Center for reconciliation of opposing sides has delivered humanitarian aid to Adra refugee camp in the Syrian province of Damascus, distributing two tonnes of food, head of the center's humanitarian aid group Eduard Titov said Monday.

"Two tonnes of food have been distributed during the [humanitarian] action. The food sets comprise rice, sugar, flour, tea," Titov told journalists.

Medicines and vitamins have been delivered to the camp as part of the humanitarian operation as well, and Russian medics examined the refugees living in the camp.

According to the center's deputy head, Maj. Gen. Yevgeny Kharchenko, more than 30 percent of all refugees who have returned to Syria require medical assistance.

"At the checkpoints and in the humanitarian corridors, every third Syrian who is returning to their homeland receives medical assistance," Kharchenko said during a meeting with local authorities and members of the public in Damascus.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for the Reception, Allocation and Accommodation of Refugees, almost 264,000 Syrians have returned to the country from abroad since September 30, 2015. At the same time, more than 1,200,000 internally displaced people have returned to their homes over the given period.

The repatriation of refugees has become one of the priorities for the Syrian government alongside the reconstruction process since most of the heavy fighting in the country is now over. Moscow has been providing assistance to Damascus, delivering humanitarian aid to Syrian people and acting as a guarantor of the ceasefire.
