Russia's Communications Watchdog Head Says Ready to Discuss RT Broadcast in UK With Ofcom

The head of Russia's communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, Alexander Zharov, said on Tuesday that he was ready to meet with representatives of the UK Office of Communications (Ofcom) to discuss the work of Russia's RT broadcaster in the United Kingdom

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th April, 2019) The head of Russia's communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, Alexander Zharov, said on Tuesday that he was ready to meet with representatives of the UK Office of Communications (Ofcom) to discuss the work of Russia's RT broadcaster in the United Kingdom.

"I'm completely open for a meeting [with Ofcom representatives]. Moreover, I will be happy if I am able to discuss this topic in detail at a personal meeting," Zharov said, answering a question about a possible meeting with Ofcom representatives.

Ofcom has repeatedly targeted RT broadcaster with investigations. Ofcom said in December that RT "broke broadcasting rules by failing to preserve due impartiality" in several programs.

These programs included English-language news broadcast, as well as Sputnik and Crosstalk shows aired in March-April 2018.

In response to Ofcom's ruling, RT said it was seeking "judicial review" of the regulator's decisions related to the broadcaster. In a statement published in January, the channel stressed that none of the in-breach decisions against RT concluded that the channel "had disseminated inaccurate information."

According to RT, Ofcom wanted the broadcaster to give more attention to "mainstream viewpoints of other broadcasters" instead of giving the audience an opportunity to listen to an independent coverage of world events.
