US Recognition Of Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights Flouts Int'l Law - Lebanon's Aoun

Lebanese President Michel Aoun said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights undermines the basic principles of international law
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order formally recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights after his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
"Unfortunately, news emerged today that the United States recognized the Golan Heights as part of Israel. Undoubtedly, this undermines all the foundations of the United Nations and international law since the very establishment of the organization," Aoun said at his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Aoun also noted that the US move raised concerns among the countries that were in close proximity to Israel.
The Golan Heights was seized by Israel from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967. In 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution urging Israel to immediately withdraw its forces from the area after the country organized local elections there on October 30.
On Monday, Aoun began his two-day official visit to Russia at Putin's invitation.
