Information Minister KP Shaukat Ali Yusafzai Thursday said that crackdown against the use of shopping bags would be launched across the province to protect the environment, the sewerage and drainage system from being collapsed
The Deputy Commissioners (DC) have been instructed in writing to come hard on people still using shopping bags in their shops.
The massive use of shopping bags has ruined the entire sewerage and drainage system in the province, he said adding it was also a major source of water pollution.
Talking to media men here, he said that use of plastic shopping bags has been banned in majority of the countries.
He said that only Oxy-biodegradable plastic bags would be allowed to use.
The violation of the law banning use of plastic bags included jail term and fine ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs5000000(fifty lakh).
The government would not succumb to any pressure in this regard because ban on plastig bag's use was meant to protect the environment from being polluted and to save the drainage system from being choked all the time.
