Islamabad High Court seeks reply from Election Commission of Pakistan regarding delay in NA-60 elections

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Monday sought reply from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on a plea challenging the postponement of elections in NA-60 after the disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Haneef Abbasi.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Jul, 2018 ) :The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Monday sought reply from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on a plea challenging the postponement of elections in NA-60 after the disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Haneef Abbasi.

Justice Aamer Farooq of IHC resumed hearing over a plea filed by Pakistan People's Party (PPP)'s candidate in NA-60 Mukhtar Abbas against the ECP's decision.

During the course of proceeding, the counsel for the petitioner Niazullah Niazi argued that the elections in any constituency should not be postponed just two days before from the issued schedule.

The court asked, whether the ballot papers have been printed for this constituency? The petitioner's counsel argued that election could not be postponed due to awarding of sentence to any candidate.

The burden of this should not be shifted on the shoulders of voters, he added.

He prayed the court to order ECP for conducting elections on July 25, in NA-60 in accordance of the settled schedule.

After hearing the arguments, the court served notice to ECP and adjourned hearing of the case till tomorrow (Tuesday).
