Lahore (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 22nd January, 2019) Pak Suzuki will stop manufacturing Mehran within the next two months.
According to media reports, a representative of Pakistan Auto Parts Manufacturers Association, Amir Allahwala told a Senate panel Suzuki Mehran’s manufacturing will come to an end within the next two months.
Senator Ahmed Khan was presiding over the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production on Tuesday where he made the briefed.
The representative said that most parts of the vehicle, including engines, are manufactured in Pakistan.
He briefed the Senate that 9 automotive manufactures are going to invest $1.5 billion in Pakistan.
He said 2.4 million people are associated with the auto industry in the country, adding that 96 percent of motorcycles are being made in Pakistan.
Amir Allahwala further informed that the country is exporting motorbikes to Afghanistan and cars to Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Pakistan imports 75,000 cars, he added.
Suzuki had launched Mehran in 1989 in Pakistan and it has since been one of the most popular cars in Pakistan.
We have been hearing for a while that Suzuki is considering stopping manufacturing Mehran but despite all the criticism and flaws, Suzuki sold more than 42,000 units of Mehran in 2017.
However, the company had officially announced in September, 2018 that it will stop the production Mehran’s VX variant from April, 2019.
Pak Suzuki is to introduce the next-generation 660cc Alto in March 2019 which will have a price tag of Rs 850,000-900,000 (approx) for the basic variant, though an official announcement in this regard is awaited.
