Areas of Caracas Gripped by Protests Suffer From Poor Internet Connection - Residents

Users of Venezuelan state owned internet provider Cantv told Sputnik on Thursday that they have problems connecting to the internet in the districts of Caracas where protests are taking place

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) Users of Venezuelan state owned internet provider Cantv told Sputnik on Thursday that they have problems connecting to the internet in the districts of Caracas where protests are taking place.

"We have problems with the internet connection in Altamira [neighborhood in Caracas], but people say that this happens on the national scale," a receptionist at one of the hotels in Caracas told Sputnik.

Another resident of the Altamira neighborhood told Sputnik that the connection has been poor since Wednesday morning.

"I do not know if there is any connection with the opposition demonstrations, but since yesterday's morning the internet is constantly disrupting, and when the connection is re-installed, it is very slow, so it is impossible to check social networks," the resident said.

On Wednesday, anti-government marches were held in Venezuela, as well as demonstrations by supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself the country's interim president on the same day. The United States urged Maduro to step down and let Guaido assume the presidency. Maduro has claimed that Washington attempted to stage a coup d'etat in Venezuela and announced his decision to cut off diplomatic relations with the United States.

So far, the United States, Canada, Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Peru have recognized Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.
