Germany Checking Chinese Huawei Devices For Security Threats - Economy Minister

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is checking electronic devices produced by Chinese company Huawei for possible information security vulnerabilities, German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier said on Friday
According to the minister, the BSI is investigating rumors that Huawei devices enable the tech giant to gather data from the German mobile network and hand over it to the Chinese authorities.
"Only experts can prove this [the rumors] ... The Federal Office for Information Security, BSI, is involved in this work [on checking Huawei devices]," Altmaier told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) newspaper.
The minister pointed out that the German government had not previously possessed any information about potential information security threats posed by Huawei devices, despite concerns expressed by other countries.
Huawei has recently faced allegations that it had been linked to the Chinese government and even has been spying on its behalf, something that the company has vehemently denied. Last year, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States banned the Chinese telecommunications giant from participating in government contracts, while several other countries voiced their own concerns over Huawei's activities.
