MADRID (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 20th November, 2018) The Russian Consulate General in Barcelona is trying to find out whether Russian citizens were traveling in a train that came off the tracks in the Spanish region of Catalonia on Tuesday morning, a consul on duty told Sputnik.
The train derailed between the cities of Terrassa and Manresa, located some 40 miles to the northwest of Barcelona. According to the preliminary information, one person had died, while dozens sustained injuries. The incident has been caused by a landslide.
"We are clarifying the information [regarding the presence of Russian nationals among the train's passengers]," the diplomat said.
The Russian Embassy in Madrid, in turn, told Sputnik that Russian citizens had not contacted the consulate following the incident.
"The information is currently being specified there [in the Russian consulate]," the embassy said.
The derailment took place due to heavy rains that have been pouring in Spain's northeastern region.
