The authorities of Russia's southwestern republic of Ingushetia have agreed to hold on Wednesday a meeting with the organizers of the rallies in Ingushetia's capital of Magas over the new border agreement with the neighboring Chechen Republic, the press service of Ingushetia said on Tuesday.
NALCHIK (Russia) (UrduPoint news / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) The authorities of Russia's southwestern republic of Ingushetia have agreed to hold on Wednesday a meeting with the organizers of the rallies in Ingushetia's capital of Magas over the new border agreement with the neighboring Chechen Republic, the press service of Ingushetia said on Tuesday.
On September 26, the two republics signed a land swap deal, backed by the parliaments in both regions on October 4. However, the constitutional court in Ingushetia said the decision could only be approved after the referendum. Protest rallies have been held since then in Magas.
"Tomorrow, on October 17, a meeting of the commission, chaired by Ingushetia's head, Yunus-bek Yevkurov, on defining borders with the Chechen Republic will take place in Magas.
Members of the organizing committee of the ongoing rally in the region will participate," the authorities said in a statement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier in October that Moscow was monitoring closely the situation in Ingushetia and trusted the regional authorities to handle the rallies.
According to the Ingushetian authorities, the agreement was fixing the mistake of 2009 when the republic annexed Chechen territories that historically belonged to Chechnya but were not reclaimed by Grozny while implementing a new Federal law on municipal borders.
