Georgia to hold British speedboat killer pending extradition

A Georgian court on Friday ordered a British man convicted of killing a woman in a speedboat crash to be detained for three months, pending extradition proceedings

Tbilisi, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Jan, 2019 ) :A Georgian court on Friday ordered a British man convicted of killing a woman in a speedboat crash to be detained for three months, pending extradition proceedings.

A court in the capital Tbilisi ruled that Jack Shepherd, 31, will remain in custody, his Georgian lawyer Tariel Kakabadze told AFP.

Shepherd was convicted of manslaughter by negligence last year for the death of Charlotte Brown, a 24-year-old woman he took on a champagne-fuelled first date on his speedboat on the River Thames in 2015.

He turned himself in to police in Tbilisi on Wednesday after being sentenced to six years in prison in Britain while on the run.

Lawyer Kakabadze has told AFP that he did not rule out challenging the extradition request.

He said that Shepherd "denies committing any crime whatsoever and is confident that he will be acquitted".

A spokeswoman for Georgia's interior ministry, Sopho Mdinaradze, has told AFP that Shepherd "will be without any doubt extradited to Britain".

Britain issued an international warrant for Shepherd's arrest after he vanished before he was due to stand trial last summer.
