Both the US Congress and Russian State Duma should take into consideration the fact that the people of both nations are interested in cooperation, State Duma lawmaker and Coordinator of Communications with Congress Inga Yumasheva told Sputnik on Monday.
WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th October, 2018) Both the US Congress and Russian State Duma should take into consideration the fact that the people of both nations are interested in cooperation, State Duma lawmaker and Coordinator of Communications with Congress Inga Yumasheva told Sputnik on Monday.
"Both Russians and people across the ocean are truly interested in peace between our countries," Yumasheva said. "Lawmakers of both countries, as representatives of the people's will, should take into account the citizens' desire to cooperate, not to confront."
Russian and US citizens are not rivals or enemies, Yumasheva said. The forces that work against constructive dialogue between the two countries use mainstream media to create the most negative image of the country, the lawmaker added.
Such demonization is evident in both Russia and the United States, Yumasheva added.
Relations between the United States and Russia worsened following their disagreement over the crisis in Ukraine. The United States imposed several round of sanctions against Russia after Crimea held a referendum in 2014 in which a vast majority of residents decided to reunify with Russia.
Washington also accused Moscow of meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and has imposed additional rounds of sanctions. Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations.
