The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said on Thursday it had decided to detain nine people over the deadly ferry accident in the city of Mosul
"The judicial authorities decided to detain nine employees responsible for the ferry accident. There is an arrest warrant for the ferry's owner," the council said in a statement.
A tourist ferry with dozens of people aboard capsized in the Tigris River in Mosul earlier on Thursday. At least 85 people died in the accident.
According to preliminary data, the accident might have been caused by the excessive number of passengers. The second possible cause for the accident is the increased water level in the Tigris River provoked by the opening of floodgates in the Mosul Dam.
