ROME (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st November, 2018) The Italian Foreign Ministry's crisis group is dealing with the issue of 23-year-old Italian citizen Sylvia Constanza Romano, a volunteer of a non-governmental organization kidnapped by armed militants in Kenya on Tuesday, sources in the ministry told Sputnik on Wednesday.
According to the information, the woman was abducted on Tuesday evening by a group of armed men in Kilifi district. In Kenya, Silvia has been involved in a number of projects to help children through Africa Milele Onlus charity.
The crisis group is in close contact with the Italian Embassy in Nairobi, and the ministry intends not to disseminate unnecessary information on the case at this time in the interests of the abducted compatriot, sources said.
According to Italian media reports from Nairobi, the kidnapping was committed by a group of four to five armed men who spoke Somali language. During the attack, five Kenyans, including children, were injured. The attackers immediately went to the house where the Italian lived, and took her in an unknown direction. Previously, foreigners have been abducted by Islamist militants from Somalia in this area of Kenya.
The Rome Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation into the abduction of an Italian citizen in Kenya under the criminal code article "kidnapping for terrorist purposes."
