MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) The Philippine navy chief, Vice Adm. Robert Empedrad, will attend Russia's Navy Day celebrations in July, the Asian country's national defense undersecretary, Cardozo M. Luna, told Sputnik in an interview.

Navy Day is annually celebrated in Russia on the last Sunday of July.

"This coming July our chief of the navy will be joining the Russian navy for the celebration of the Navy Day of Russia," Cardozo Luna said.

Russia and the Philippines maintain active defense industry cooperation, with Manila stressing its interest in purchasing Russia's advanced weapons.

Most recently, in March, following the talks with Russian counterparts, Empedrad announced that the two sides had finalized a naval agreement and intended to sign it during his visit to Russia in July. He, however, did not specify the dates.

The pact will reportedly set out areas for cooperation between the two navies, including such issues as port visits and naval drills.
