Polish President Andrzej Duda said Friday that a decision to set up a US base in the country could be made next spring.
WARSAW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st December, 2018) Polish President Andrzej Duda said Friday that a decision to set up a US base in the country could be made next spring.
Poland has been advocating for a permanent US military presence in addition to the troops already stationed there as part of NATO. US President Donald Trump said in September that he was looking into this possibility.
Speaking to a local online publication, Wirtualna Polska, Duda confirmed that "decisions on this matter may be taken as early as in spring," according to excerpts published by his office.
The Polish president explained that stronger US presence in the country on NATO's eastern flank would contribute to national and regional security.
Trump said in fall that his Polish counterpart had suggested naming the base Fort Trump and even offered to pay around $2 billion toward the cost of the facility.
