SINGAPORE (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 14th November, 2018) Establishing a strategic partnership between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will stimulate the development of bilateral political and economic relations, Russian Ambassador to the ASEAN Alexander Ivanov said Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the leaders of Russia and the ASEAN signed a joint statement regarding the strategic partnership at their summit in Singapore.
"Bringing our relations with the ASEAN to the level of strategic partnership will give a very powerful impetus to the development of our relations in three areas: politics and security, trade and the economy, as well as humanitarian cooperation," Ivanov told reporters on the sidelines of the ASEAN-Russia Summit.
The diplomat noted that over the past two years, Russia and the ASEAN had achieved meaningful results in these areas, mentioning regular meetings of economy and culture ministers, as well as cooperation between law enforcement agencies within a specialized working group.
This week, Singapore is hosting the 33rd ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings as well as the 13th East Asia Summit.
