MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th October, 2018) The Russian Justice Ministry said on Friday it had appealed the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) stipulating that Moscow should pay a compensation of over 37,000 Euros ($42,000) to the members of the punk-rock activist group Pussy Riot.
"The European Court of Human Rights's ruling in the case 'Alekhina and Others versus Russia' of July 2018 has been challenged in accordance with the established procedure," the ministry said.
In July, the ECHR ruled that Russia should pay 37,000 euros in damages to the members of Pussy Riot, plus 11,760 euros for costs and expenses.
The group has leaped in the spotlight after its high-profile performance in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Three of the band members Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich were sentenced to two years in prison for hooliganism in August 2012. Samutsevich's sentence was commuted to parole in October 2012, while the two other members of the group were released from prison under the amnesty in December 2013.
