MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Russia opened 5,700 new branded hotel rooms in 2018, a record figure that is 50 percent greater than that of last year, the US real estate company JLL said on Friday.
"The hotels that opened in the cities [that hosted] the World Cup (3,400 rooms) accounted for the lion's share of the increase," the company's statement read.
Moscow led in the number of new branded hotel rooms with 1,700, followed by St. Petersburg with 539 rooms, according to the company.
In 2019, the expansion of branded hotels in Russia will slow down as less than 3,800 rooms are expected to open, 1,100 of which will be in Moscow. New hotel rooms will be also opened in Sochi, Rostov-on-Don and Yekaterinburg.
From June 14 to July 15, Russia hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. Matches were played in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Volgograd, and Samara.
