MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 13th March, 2019) Russia's first self-driving cars are scheduled to appear on the streets of Moscow and Russia's Republic of Tatarstan in late April-May as part of the government's initiative to test autonomous vehicles, Alexander Morozov, Russia's deputy minister of industry and trade, said on Wednesday.

"I think [they will be on the streets] in late April to May," the official said.

This time frame was chosen in order to test the driverless cars without the added disadvantage of snow, Morozov explained.

The majority of self-driving cars will belong to Russia's technology company Yandex, which first announced its self-driving car project in May 2017.

According to Dmitry Polishchuk, head of the Yandex.Taxi Self-Driving Project, Yandex is one of the few global companies that have the technological capacity to turn the project into reality. In January, the company exhibited one of its first driverless cars at the Consumer Electronics Show convention in Las Vegas, demonstrating its capabilities in the field through test drives.
