Spanish Transport Unions Planning to Hold Strikes on Christmas, New Year Holidays

Spanish transport unions are preparing to hold railroad and subway strikes during the New Year and Christmas holidays to express their discontent with employment policies.

Renfe and Adif companies have announced train service cancellations for December 21 and January 7, according to one of the largest trade unions in the country, the Workers' Commission.

Protesters are demanding "the renewal of staff," as trade unions believe that more young people and women should work in transport sphere. Now women constitute only 13 percent of companies' employees. Railroad workers also demand wage raise and reduction of workload.

In addition, Renfe inspectors' strike will take place on Friday. Adif inspectors are expected to go on strike on Thursday and then December 21 and 28.

Security staff of the Barcelona subway is expected to hold strikes on December 31 and January 5.
