Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi commended Russia's support for Yemen and its government, local media reported
On Sunday, Hadi met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov on the sidelines of the League of Arab States summit in the Tunisian capital of Tunis.
According to the government-controlled Saba news agency, Hadi said there were deep and strong links between the two countries, and also asked Bogdanov to convey his greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bogdanov, in turn, expressed his satisfaction with their meeting, which was held in the context of mutual cooperation, the agency reported. He also stressed Russia's aspiration to restore security and stability to Yemen.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also reported on Monday that during the meeting, the sides discussed the prospects of ceasing armed confrontation in Yemen and establishing a peace process under the aegis of the United Nations.
Bogdanov and Hadi also touched upon some key issues related their countries' relations, which aim to help Yemen end its military-political conflict and overcome its dire humanitarian crisis.
Yemen has been suffering from a conflict between government forces and the Shiite rebel Houthi movement since August 2014. The confrontation escalated after a Saudi-led coalition intervened in the conflict in March 2015 to back the Yemeni government. Since then the coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at President Hadi's request. The conflict has resulted in a massive humanitarian crisis that the United Nations has deemed the worst in the world.
