Various health organizations and hospitals in twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi also organized seminars and discussions in this regard to highlight the importance of the day.

Media coordinator Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Dr Waseem Khawaja told APP that washing of hands with soap properly is very important in preventing diarrhea and other diseases and has far reaching effects on the health and welfare of children and communities" Global Hand-washing Day (GHD) is a campaign that was initiated by the Global Hand-washing Partnership (GHP) in August 2008 at the annual World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their hand-washing habits The campaign was initiated to reduce childhood mortality rates and related respiratory and diarrheal diseases by introducing simple behavioural changes, such as hand-washing with soap.

This simple action can reduce the mortality rate of respiratory disease by 25%.

Death from diarrheal diseases can be reduced by 50%. Scientific evidence supports the observation that if properly implemented, hand hygiene alone can significantly reduce the risk of cross-transmission of infection in healthcare facilities.
