Population touches 207 million, growth rate reaches 2.4 percent

Recent population figures reached 207.774 million with the growth rate of 2.4 percent urging it an utmost importance for Pakistan to ensure resource mobilization in an effective manner to control the rapid population growth.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Jun, 2018 ) :Recent population figures reached 207.774 million with the growth rate of 2.4 percent urging it an utmost importance for Pakistan to ensure resource mobilization in an effective manner to control the rapid population growth.

According to the figures of the recent population census 2017, rapid population growth is an eye opener for the government and stakeholders to work on a rigorous population planning and strategy.

The government is well aware of the high population growth rate and working to formulate a comprehensive action plan to deal with the challenging situation of country, annual plan 2018-19 revealed.

To cater the emerging challenges, the government is planning "formation of Population Commission of Pakistan (PCP)" which is direly needed and proposed to be formed, annual plan added.

The commission will have the highest commitments from the Federal and Provincial governments and all other Private Sector Population Stakeholders and Development Partners in matters related to Population, High Growth Rate and sustainable development.

The lead role for coordinating and overseeing the Population and Family Planning issues will rest with the domain of the proposed Commission under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform will have its Secretariat and coordinating role, it said.

A comprehensive National Action Plan for Family Planning and to control the high population growth rate should be the prime task of the Commission.

The role of the Planning Commission will be enhanced in populationrelated matters as it has the foremost capacity to coordinate with the Provincesand Special Areas and to put them on the fast track for national priorities, better implementation of the Population Welfare Programme, for achieving goals of national and international commitments, annual plan reported.
