The Supreme Court on Thursday summoned officials of the anti-corruption department and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to appear in person before court in a case regarding appointments on quotas for disabled persons
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Munib Akhtar, heard the case, filed by Dr. Shahnawaz Munami & others regarding rights of the disabled people.
During the course of proceedings, the petitioner said that a person with low levels of hearing had been deemed more deserving of the quota than someone who suffered far more restrictive disabilities in one case.
He alleged that a man who claimed he had a weak leg had been given employment at the National Assembly Secretariat, and a number of people with similarly flimsy claims, had been unjustly employed in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa.
He said that the deserving people were forced to knock door to door.
Justice Azmat Saeed responded that action would be taken against all individuals, found facilitating undeserving people acquire jobs, meant for disabled persons.
He remarked that it looked like that all the work being done by government departments was fake.
He observed that meritless employment on the quota for persons with disability was a crime. He remarked that the impression was that these inductions were not done on the basis of merit and asked why not send these cases to the National Accountability Bureau for investigation.
The government lawyers, however, opposed the decision, saying that they would compensate it if any neglect in following the rules was pointed out to them instead.
The petitioner said that they were given threats whenever they challenged someone's employment under disabled quota.
Justice Azmat Saeed remarked that the government officers have no fear of the law as they think there was no one standing behind the disabled persons.
The court asked the petitioner to indicate employments made ondisabled persons quota, summoned FIA and Anti Corruption Departmentofficials and adjourned hearing of the case till June 20.
