World Diabetes Day observed here on Wednesday to raise awareness about harmful effects of diabetes and its complications amongst the general population and professionals

HYDERABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Nov, 2018 ) :World Diabetes Day observed here on Wednesday to raise awareness about harmful effects of diabetes and its complications amongst the general population and professionals.

This year the theme of World Diabetes Day 2018 and 2019 is "The Family and Diabetes".

Talking to APP here on Wednesday, on World Diabetes Day consultant Diabetologist Dr.Javaid Sakrani said that it is uncertain why diabetes occurs, although it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of diabetes.

He said that diabetes is one of the major health challenges of the 21st century adding that the diabetes and its complications are largely preventable and there are proven, affordable interventions available.

Dr.Javaid Sakrani said that the diabetes is one of the most chronic diseases of adult and childhood and it can strike children of any age including infants and toddlers.

He said that the daily life of diabetic patients is disrupted by the need to monitor blood glucose levels, take medication, and balance the effect of activity and food.

Dr.Javaid further informed that amputations due to diabetes cause unnecessary loss of life and disability. In high-income countries, treatment of diabetic foot complication accounts for 15-25 percent of total health care resources for diabetes, he added.

About the diet and nutrition Dr.Javaid said that the patients are usually dependent on soup,kitchens or shelters for meals, and it may be difficult to plan meals to coincide with insulin administration.

He explained that the coincide should work with shelters and soup kitchens to promote healthy food choices and to provide supplemental snacks to those with diabetes, added.

About exercise he said that few patients who are homeless, walking is their typical exercise and they usually carry their belongings, which increases the exercise effort.

He said that patients with foot problems should take precautionary measures such as proper footwear, added.

Dr.Javaid Sakrani said everyone is concerned and has a role to play in helping to turn the tide of diabetes to protect our future.

He emphasized that better environment can also reduce chances of diabetes. There is a lack of recreational parks and grounds. Such facilities are imperative to ensure that the future generation is physically and mentally fit, Dr.Sakrani added.

While, in connection with 'World Diabetes Day" Indus International Lion Club", also organized a walk to raise mass awareness against the diabetes.

The walk started from Hyderabad Gymkhana, which after marching through different routes culminated in front of Hyderabad Press Club.

Addressing a diabetic walk president Indus International Lions Club Muhammad Munaff said that sugar has become a fast spreading disease and its major causes are over eating, to avoid physical exercise and family background. He said that doctors should also aware the patients about the preventive measures while giving them the treatment.

District Governor International Lions Club Zulfiqar chohan said though diabetes was termed 'a silent killer, today people need not worry about it as adherence to diet and a modified lifestyle would help them lead normal lives.

Zulfiqar chohan called upon the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working in health sector to extend their full cooperation to the Government in controlling the increasing rate in Diabetes.

The walk attended by a large number of the people who belong to different health organizations and medical Institutions.

Meanwhile, International Lions Club also in connection with the day, a free Diabetic medical camp where medical l experts conducted the clinical examinations of diabetic patients and vaccinated against concerned diseases and also provided free of cost medicines to them.
