World patient safety day celebrated at KMU

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Sep, 2021 ) :Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) held a ceremony to mark World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) on Wednesday.

Objectives of the day is to enhance global understanding of patient safety, increase public engagement in health care safety, and promote global action to prevent and reduce avoidable harm in health care.

To acknowledge the importance of safety for mothers and newborns, the theme of WPSD 2021 is "safe maternal and newborn care" under the campaign slogan, "act now for safe and respectful childbirth". In this regard, the KMU-Faculty of Public Health and Social Sciences has arranged a seminar in collaboration with the WHO team.

Besides vice chancellor KMU Prof Dr Zia ul haq, Nasir Rafiq Ahmad, Member Examination board, Pakistan Medical Commission, Islamabad, Registrar KMU Prof Dr Saleem Gandapur, Addl Director General Health Services Dr Adnan Taj , Dr Mazhar Khan Technical Officer MNCH-WHO, Dr Sahib Gul Dir MNCH KP, Dr Anisa Afridi Dir MNCH Merged Distt , Dr Jalil Khan, HDs of all tertiary care hospitals, Representatives of the Health Department, KMU Faculty, Students, WHO team and all major hospitals of KP along with their patient' safety team members and focal persons participated in the event.

The aim of this event was to highlight the importance of patient safety in health care and create momentum to enhance public engagement and promote global action on safety.

The Speakers and panelists discussed the need to prioritize and address safety in maternal and newborn care, particularly around the time of childbirth, when most harm occurs. They emphasized the importance of patient safety in the context of the disruption of health services due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has further compounded the situation.

Vice Chancellor KMU, Prof Dr Zia ul Haq in his closing remarks assured that his faculty and institute will actively participate in capacity building of the health care workers of KP according to the standards framed by WHO and to ensure safety as per the satisfaction of the patients.
