Returning Vonn 10th Fastest In First Cortina Training Run, Skips Second

American speed queen Lindsey Vonn posted the 10th fastest time in the first training run on Thursday, but did not start the second as she prepares to open her injury-hit World Cup season in the downhill in Cortina d'Ampezzo
Vonn, returning after injuring her knee last November, clocked 1min 38.46sec down the Olympia delle Tofane course -- 0.76sec behind Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel who posted the fastest time of 1min 37.7sec.
In cloudy conditions, Austria's Tamara Tipler was second fastest at 0.06sec with France's Romane Miradoli third best at 0.39sec down the 2,660 metres piste.
Swiss skier Corinne Suter was fastest in the second run with 1min 16.17sec ahead of Austria's Cornelia Huetter at 0.27sec and Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec third 0.
36.
World Cup downhill leader Nicole Schmidhofer of Austria was sixth fastest in the first run and 15th in the second.
Vonn -- who has said she will retire after the World Cup in Lake Louise in December 2019 -- is targeting Ingemar Stenmark's long-time record of 86 World Cup wins.
Vonn, four short of Stenmark's record, was due to make her comeback from a knee injury which has sidelined her since November last weekend in St Anton. But bad weather saw all races in the Austrian resort cancelled.
So instead the 34-year-old makes her return in the Italian Dolomites where she has racked up 12 World Cup wins -- six downhill and six super-G.
Friday's downhill replaces the St Anton race, with another downhill on Saturday and the super-G on Sunday.
