Russia can still be at the forefront of the technological revolution in space, atomic energy and other areas of research if it capitalizes on its intellectual potential, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

Putin was speaking to hundreds of students and educators attending a four-day career orientation forum in the city of Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow.

"If we have brains and know how to apply them we will continue to lead such areas as space, nuclear energy, materials science and more ... rather than jump into the last car of the departing technological revolution train," Putin said.

The president noted that Russia lagged behind other countries in terms of population growth, which affected its industrial output - the measure of economic well-being - and needed to balance it out with an active role in technological development.
