Canada's Legalization of Marijuana Use Violates International Drug Control Rules - Moscow

Canada's decision to legalize recreational marijuana sales contradicts basics of international drug control, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 17th October, 2018) Canada's decision to legalize recreational marijuana sales contradicts basics of international drug control, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, media reported that the Federal law on the legalization of marijuana came into force in Canada on Wednesday, October 17, and now the country's residents would be able to use marijuana for recreational purposes.

"We are convinced that this legislative act is contrary to the foundations of the international legal regime of drug control, as it is a violation in the international legal sphere," she told a briefing.

Zakharova added that the Canadian government, deliberately destroying the international drug control regime, was creating the world's largest commercial drug market, which, despite the planned measures to prevent the export of marijuana from Canada, would contribute to a sharp increase in marijuana traffic.

"Russia and probably other countries will have to take additional measures to prevent possible attempts to smuggle cannabis and its derivatives from Canada," she said.
