Colombian President, Interpol Chief Discuss Regional, Global Security Threats - Statement

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st May, 2019) Colombian President Ivan Duque and Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock discussed ways to combat regional organized crime and terrorist threats, a statement published on Interpol's website on Tuesday said.

Stock is currently on his working visit to Colombia.

"Addressing regional organized crime and terrorist threats was the focus of discussions between Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez and INTERPOL Secretary General Jurgen Stock. With Colombia one of the highest users of INTERPOL's global databases, the INTERPOL Chief said the country provided a model for law enforcement agencies around the world," the statement said.

Stock visited a police academy in Bogota that was attacked by the Colombian National Liberation Army (ELN) in January, the statement said.

According to the statement, Stock also signed an agreement with the National Police of Colombia, according to which Colombia officially supports the Interpol Global Academy that brings together global and regional law enforcement training academies.

On January 17, a bomb-laden car broke through a checkpoint near the police academy building and exploded on its premises, killing as many as 21 people. ELN claimed responsibility for the attack. Duque ordered to remove the suspension of the arrest warrants for ten ELN members who were part of the rebel delegation at peace talks with the government.
