German Delegation Arrives In Crimea - Crimean Parliament Member

A German delegation of activists and journalists has arrived in Crimea on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the referendum and reunification

SIMFEROPOL (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 16th March, 2019) A German delegation of activists and journalists has arrived in Crimea on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the referendum and reunification of the peninsula with Russia, a member of Crimean parliament Yury Gempel told Sputnik on Saturday.

"A German delegation comprised of 10 people has arrived in Crimea. Their visit is symbolic because it begins on the day when the Crimeans held a historic referendum five years ago, thanks to which they were able to return to their historic homeland, Russia," Gempel said.

He added that the German delegation would stay in Crimea for four days.

The visit will include a meeting with the leadership of the Crimean parliament, as well as contacts with the population of the peninsula.

Crimea rejoined Russia in 2014, when 97 percent of those who participated in the referendum on the matter supported the reunification. The reunification was not recognized by Ukraine or Western states, which subsequently imposed economic and political sanctions on Moscow. Russia has repeatedly stated that the referendum was conducted in compliance with international law.
