Kazakhstan believes that confidence-building measures are the most important condition for further implementation of the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the republic's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
ALMATY (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 18th September, 2018) Kazakhstan believes that confidence-building measures are the most important condition for further implementation of the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the republic's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
"[We need to] solve all the problematic issues related to weapons of mass destruction through the implementation of confidence-building measures, especially between Russia, China and the United States," Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN Kairat Umarov said at an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council.
Umarov recalled that this was exactly what Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev called for when addressing the UN Security Council topical meeting in January this year, calling such measures an important element in maintaining the global security and strengthening peace.
Today, the situation on the Korean Peninsula is much more favorable than ever before, he noted.
"It encourages us to focus on further manifestation of goodwill, openness and mutual concessions," Umarov said, also expressing a hope for the successful continuation of political and diplomatic efforts.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula has significantly improved over the last few months, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledging to give up his nuclear aspirations and having held several rounds of talks with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in and a summit with US President Donald Trump. Moon started his first official visit to Pyongyang earlier in the day.
