Moscow Concerned Over US Plans To Buy Weapons In East Europe To Arm Venezuelan Opposition

Russia is concerned over Washington's plans to buy weapons in Eastern Europe in order to arm the opposition forces in Venezuela, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 01st March, 2019) Russia is concerned over Washington's plans to buy weapons in Eastern Europe in order to arm the opposition forces in Venezuela, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday.

"We are concerned about the US plans to arm militants to destabilize the situation in Venezuela and, strictly speaking, to invade this sovereign country, as the US does not hesitate to speak openly about them," Lavrov said at talks with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

"The incoming information suggests that the United States plans in the near future to purchase small arms, mortars, portable air defense systems and a number of other weapons in one of the Eastern European countries.

.. and send it closer to Venezuela by air," the minister said.

Lavrov added that Moscow, as well as Venezuela's neighbors, sees this intention of the United States to arms the Venezuelan opposition.

"Venezuela's neighbors Brazil and Colombia, in particular have stated that they would not in any way support plans for an armed invasion of this country. If they keep their word and follow this position, then, probably, the US plans will not be realized," Lavrov said.
