Police opened fire Wednesday in a southern Indian city to disperse demonstrators who hurled petrol bombs, a day after fatally shooting 10 protesters there, witnesses said.

"Police opened fire after protesters hurled home-made bombs and pelted stones at them," a witness told AFP in Tuticorin, where 10 people were killed Tuesday in police firing.
The protesters have been demanding the closure of a copper plant owned by British mining giant Vedanta Resources which they say is causing environmental damage.
