MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd December, 2018) A war between Russia and Ukraine is impossible, member of the Russian parliament's upper house Frants Klintsevich said on Friday, adding that the Western countries should understand this fact.
Earlier in the day, one of the Ukrainian lawmakers prepared a draft address of the parliament to President Petro Poroshenko asking him to break diplomatic ties with Russia and declare a war on the neighboring country.
"I am absolutely sure that there could be no war between Russia and Ukraine. That is our principle position. I hope that Europe will take a sensible position [on the issue]," Klintsevich said, as quoted by his press service.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Poroshenko signed the law stating that Ukraine would not renew the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia, which expires on April 1, 2019.
Relations between Moscow and Kiev deteriorated in 2014 after Crimea's reunification with Russia and amid the crisis in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities have accused Russia of interfering in Ukraine's internal affairs and being involved in the conflict in Donbas.
Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations, stressing that it is not party to the internal conflict in Ukraine and wanted the country to overcome its political and economic crises.
