South Korean Defense Minister Asks US Congress for Further Support for Alliance - Reports

South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo met on Wednesday with US Congress officials and asked them for further support for the strong alliance between Seoul and Washington, local media reported

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo met on Wednesday with US Congress officials and asked them for further support for the strong alliance between Seoul and Washington, local media reported.

According to the Yonhap news agency, Jeong met Sen. Chris Coons and Sen. Maggie Hassan in Seoul. During the meeting, the South Korean defense minister expressed appreciation for the senators' support for peace-building initiatives on the Korean Peninsula.

Jeong's also opined at the meeting that the US-South Korean alliance was stronger than ever before.

The defense minister also asked the US lawmakers for further supporting peace and denuclearization efforts on the Korean Peninsula.

The senators, in turn, reaffirmed commitment to the efforts aimed at stabilization of the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

They also called for close coordination of positions between the United States and South Korea within the alliance between the two countries.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula improved last year with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in having held three bilateral summits. Kim has also held two meetings with US President Donald Trump, with the parties having reached an agreement in June, stipulating that North Korea would make efforts to promote complete denuclearization of the peninsula in exchange for US-South Korean military drills' freeze and a potential removal of US sanctions. However, the second Trump-Kim summit held in February ended with no new agreements.
